Blame it on the MOON ...

Blame it on the MOON ...

Sleepless nights, ancient rhythms and the magic of the Grain Moon

Did you spend last night tossing and turning?
Did your brain suddenly decide that 3:17 a.m. was the perfect time to analyse your entire existence?
Maybe you felt more emotional than usual, easily irritated or strangely restless. Or perhaps it was quite the opposite: you were buzzing with energy, creativity and ideas.

Well…

Blame it on the Moon. 🌕

Humans have been fascinated by that mysterious light in the night sky for thousands of years. We have built stories, rituals, myths and entire traditions around it.
But does the full moon really affect us?
Or does it simply awaken something in us that still remembers the ancient rhythms of nature?

🌾 The Grain Moon — a time to harvest

The full moon of August has been given several names. One of the best known is the Sturgeon Moon, a name rooted in North American traditions.
But there is another old name I personally find much more beautiful:

the Grain Moon.

For centuries, August was harvest season. Seeds planted months earlier had been given sunlight, rain, time and patience.
Now, finally, the grain could be gathered.
Symbolically, that makes the Grain Moon a beautiful moment to ask yourself:
What have you planted these past few months — and what are you ready to harvest?

🌙 Does the full moon really keep us awake?

This is where science and ancient stories meet.
Some studies have found changes in sleeping patterns around the full moon. People fell asleep later, slept for slightly less time or spent less time in deep sleep.
Other studies, however, found little or no connection at all.
So science cannot simply say:

Full moon = bad night's sleep.

One possible explanation is light.
Long before evenings were filled with lamps, televisions and glowing phone screens, nature decided when darkness arrived. A full moon genuinely made the night brighter.
Our bodies still respond strongly to light and darkness.
Almost as though they sometimes remember things our minds have long forgotten.

🌊 The Moon, the ocean and us

You have probably heard this one:
The Moon moves the oceans. We are mostly made of water. So why wouldn't it move us too?
It sounds wonderfully magical.
Scientifically, though, things aren't quite that simple. The gravitational pull of the Moon, together with that of the Sun, creates the tides, but that doesn't mean the water inside our bodies is being pulled around in the same way.

Still, the symbolism is far too beautiful to throw away.
Perhaps the Moon doesn't need to literally move the water inside us to set something in motion.
A feeling.
A thought.
A longing.

The full moon brings things into the light.
And what is illuminated becomes visible.

✨ The full moon as a mirror

Some people feel tired, emotional or irritable around the full moon.
Others seem to come alive.
They write. Create. Rearrange the furniture. Suddenly have seventeen new ideas. Or simply realise, with remarkable clarity:
I don't want this anymore.

In many spiritual traditions, the full moon represents completion, awareness, release and revelation.
And that is exactly why the Grain Moon feels so fitting.
A harvest doesn't only show us what grew.
It also reveals which seeds never sprouted. Which plans changed. Which things we carefully nurtured but which, in the end, simply weren't meant for us.
Sometimes harvesting means taking something with you.
And sometimes it means saying:

I'm leaving this behind.

🌾 A little Grain Moon ritual

You don't need crystals on your windowsill or a midnight barefoot dance through a field.
Although I'm certainly not going to stop you. 😉
Just take a piece of paper and ask yourself three questions:

What have I planted?
Where have you invested your time, love, energy or courage?

What have I harvested?
What have you learned? How have you grown?

What doesn't need to follow me into the next season?
A fear, an expectation, a habit or an old story you keep telling yourself.

Not because the Moon demands it.
But because sometimes we need a moment to consciously choose.

🌕 And maybe that is the real magic

Perhaps the full moon affects our sleep a little.
Perhaps light, biological rhythms and expectation all play their part.
And perhaps we will never be able to explain every little piece of it.

That's okay.
Because somewhere between science and ancient stories, there is still a beautiful piece of unclaimed territory:
wonder.

Tonight, we look at the same Moon people gazed at thousands of years ago. People who loved, dreamed, lost things, began again and planted seeds without knowing what would eventually grow.
Perhaps that is the real message of the Grain Moon.
Don't only look at what is still missing.
Look at what has already grown.
And ask yourself:

What is my harvest?

Because sometimes magic is simply the moment you stop searching for what is missing…
and finally see what has been there all along.
